US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Elon Musk will head the newly established ‘Department of Government Efficiency’—a position Trump alluded to during his campaign. Musk will share leadership of the department with Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
“In tandem, these two remarkable Americans will help my Administration eliminate government bureaucracy, reduce unnecessary regulations, cut wasteful spending, and reform Federal Agencies—key elements of the ‘Save America’ initiative,” Trump stated.
“I am excited to see Elon and Vivek implement changes within the Federal Bureaucracy with a focus on efficiency and improving life for all Americans,” he added. Trump emphasized that they would work to eliminate the “significant waste and fraud” present in the government.
Trump secured his presidential victory last week, defeating Democratic opponent Kamala Harris by 69 electoral votes. In his victory speech, he praised Musk as an “amazing and super genius guy” and noted that the billionaire had spent two weeks campaigning with him across Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.
“We have a new star—Elon. He’s incredible. While sitting together tonight, I mentioned how he campaigned vigorously in various parts of Pennsylvania,” Trump remarked to his supporters.
Musk, a strong supporter of Trump, played a pivotal role in the Republican campaign, contributing over $100 million to Trump’s re-election efforts and actively promoting the campaign through his social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
On November 9, Trump further confirmed Musk’s involvement in his administration by inviting him to join a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to a Ukrainian official, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Musk for providing Starlink services, although the primary dialogue was with Trump, as reported by AFP.
